Twined and twisted, Starlands weaves scent, basketry, and found objects in a tribute to summers spent at my grandparents by the beach. The dyed reed and cane references seaweeds collected by the shore. My own collection of shells, rocks, and sea glass sit within the basket, the result of five summers of beach combing. The inner basket contains notes of sweet orange, atlas cedar, jasmine, and rose, with each reed soaked in a specific scent that interlock. Combined with the outer notes of black pepper, patchouli, geranium, and jasmine, Starlands commemorates treasured memories with scent, celebrating the labor of collecting and the handwoven form.
